Burning Man is described by the organizers as a social experiment. This test of human nature, in which the observer takes part, is intended to generate questions about society and culture. The relationships of its participants are usually temporary and intense. Participants create art, mobilize dance, tell stories, sing songs, share food, drink and drugs, and, perhaps most important of all, reflect on themselves and on the social world around them.

Groups meet the week before the festival to plan etc. What appears to be a spontaneous rather than formal group or committee is inadequate for coordination. People are encouraged to "build new and better worlds!" and this is the challenge of the week. Over the last few years, it has become predominantly a young adult gathering and the creative energy is growing at an incredible rate. Once initiated, most people continue to attend for the rest of the week.

The weekend festivities begin on Wednesday. This is a family-friendly week, although many people go out on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. Burners leave their campsites (where they sleep and live) between Wednesday night and Sunday night.

Attendees are expected to be present for the entire duration of the week. Burners have different levels of commitment, ranging from casual attendance to deep involvement and self-definition. Some Burners take the week as an opportunity to retire from society and seek enlightenment. Some live on the Campsite and work in the arts, providing their own food. For some, it is an opportunity to exhibit their body. Burners eat for free. A few provide lodging only for that weekend and leave their belongings behind. Some even choose not to purchase festival tickets. Burning Man has become a destination for contemplative introspection and self-reflection.

Organizers note that the event has become "too big for any one group to sustain" and that participants must "work together to keep the event from failing." With the increase in attendance, increasingly complex demands, and greater degrees of freedom to learn and experiment, how do the organizers balance the needs of participants (planning, group coordination, etc.) while also building and maintaining an "enjoyably wild" environment? d2c66b5586
